Caring for Kids

This ministry fills in the gap for needs that arise throughout the year at Hickory Grove Elementary School. The ministry grew out of a specific need expressed by Hickory Grove Elementary School at our Children’s Sabbath worship service in 2016.  Our speaker, from the school, stated there was a pressing need for socks and underwear for students who got dirty during the day or needed those basic articles of clothing. Our church stepped up immediately and collected an overwhelming amount of not only socks and underwear but school uniforms which were also badly needed.

At this time, the school does not need socks and underwear for their students, but there are other ways we, as a church community, can partner with the school right next door.

School Supplies Need

Hickory Grove Elementary would appreciate donations of items like ‘fun’ pencils and erasers, party favor type items etc. Caring for Kids is also collecting school supplies for returning students. The most needed items are: backpacks, pencils, any used children’s books, Lysol wipes, folders, notebooks, markers, lined paper, Kleenex, hand sanitizer, crayons and construction paper.

Place items in the bins marked for Hickory Grove Elementary in the FLC and church hallway and they will be distributed to the school and any student needing supplies.

Watch for more information about specific items we will be collecting each Sunday in August. Contact Jatana Royster with any questions. (jatanaroyster@gmail.com)

School Uniforms Needed

Caring for Kids is collecting school uniforms.

  • navy blue, baby blue or white shirts/polos,
  • navy blue and khaki pants.

This year they needed mostly size 8 and 10 as well as 4 and 5. Any size you can donate will be used and appreciated.

The uniform items (shirts and pants) can be found at Wal-Mart, Target, Famous Mart etc. They do not have any type of emblem on them. The items are plain shirts/polos and pants.

Contact Jatana Royster at 704-454-5333 or email your name and contact information to jatanaroyster@gmail.com to volunteer.

Reading Buddies (CMS North Star Reading Partners)

Sign up to be a reading buddy at Hickory Grove Elementary School http://cmsnorthstar.weebly.com/home.html. Buddies are assigned to a student which they meet with each week during the school year. The reading buddy helps the student to ensure he/she is reading on grade level or higher by third grade and improving his/her comprehension skills in order to achieve academic success.
